‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ Top 5 Plotholes (and how they could have fixed them)

5. What’s with Kitty Pride’s new ability?

Kitty is the girl who can walk through walls and everyone knows that. Nowhere is it ever mentioned that she has the ability to send consciousness back in time. Everyone I’ve talked to about this movie found this confusing. The makers of the film came out and said it was an homage to the original comic, because in that story Kitty was the one that was sent to the past and not Wolverine. Having her involved in the time travel was Being that Ellen Paige has become a very popular figure since her appearance in ‘X-men: The Last Stand’, they probably felt best to give her a bigger part. I don’t think the confusion was worth it.

How to fix it.

They could have had Wolverine make a snarky remark like “Where was this ability back when Jean died?” But even that wouldn’t quite fix it. The best thing to have done was to get a completely different mutant to do it. A character that says she tried to send people back in time but they all died when she tried sending them further than a month. That’s where Wolverine steps up and says he can survive the process. When Kitty Pride says it wouldn’t work, it doesn’t seem like she ever tried it. When Wolverine wakes up in the past he seems absolutely fine from the get go. It is like there is nothing to regenerate. The process couldn’t have been that bad? That kind of thing makes me wonder why she never tried to send Professor Xavier back. I mean if it didn’t work she could send Bishop back 10 minutes to stop her from killing Professor X and then it’s back to the drawing board.

4. Where is Nightcrawler?

index

Nightcrawler is one of my favorite mutants and Bryan Singer brought him to life in ‘X2: X-Men United’ in mind blowing fashion. But let’s not forget who literally brought him to life, Mystique and Azazel. We learn that Azazel was one of the mutants that died between the events of First Class and Days of Futures Past. At the end of ‘First Class’ Mystique and Azazel both chose to join Magneto’s side. Everything was in line for them to have a relationship and a child. But there was no mention of Mystique having a baby or ever having a romantic relationship with Azazel.

How to fix it.

Just a mention of their relationship and the baby would have sufficed. If they established that there was a relationship between Azazel and Mystique then her crying when seeing his autopsy photo in Trask’s files would have had a bigger impact. Let’s also say she had to give up her baby so she can kill the man that killed his father. Knowing she gave her child up would have given her mission and her character a lot more emotional depth. And imagine a brief shot of a child with blue skin, yellow eyes, and a tail. That would have blown everyone’s goddamn minds.

3. The JFK Assassination

The reason Magneto is in prison is because he killed JFK (allegedly). He of course denies it and we are meant to believe him. However, Xavier mentions a fun little conspiracy theory that involves a “bending bullet”. If Magneto was trying to save JFK, then how did the bullet bend and still strike the president’s skull? Any curvature in the bullets path would have significantly changed its course. If he did manage to bend it at all than he either purposefully killed the president or he accidently landed a headshot by steering a bullet that would have missed into a critical hit.

How to fix it.

Fox could do something like Marvel’s One Shots that could answer this question. I’d like to see the events that led to the JFK’s assassination.

2. Who takes over the Sentinel program after Trask dies?

In the comics this wasn’t a question because Bolivar Trask didn’t die. It was Senator Kelly who was assassinated and as a result Trask’s Sentinel program got the “go ahead” from the powers that be. Since Senator Kelly was turned into a puddle of water in the first X-Men (2000) it makes sense to make a change to the original story. It would have been nice to give the villain of the future a face. I’m not sure if the Sentinels became self aware and took over like Skynet or if there is someone behind the scenes that command them all. It doesn’t seem very likely that humans would still be in control of them at this point considering how obviously worse off the world is for human and mutants.

How to fix it.

If they had just shown a shot of Mastermold during Professor Xavier’s narration I would have been extremely happy. In the comics, Mastermold is like the mother of all Sentinels.

1. Where were the Sentinels during every other X-Men film?

If Sentinels and mutant locating technology was functional in the 70’s than where were they in the first three X-men movies. If the program got so much support after Trask died than what is going on. Hank McCoy (a.k.a Beast) was made Secretary of Mutant Affairs. Would they really have that position if they are government funded mutant killing robot being made? And you would think those handheld mutant detecting devices would be useful.

How to fix it.

They could have made Trask’s ideas theoretical. If the Sentinel prototypes were just life sized model representations of his vision, then we could understand that real Sentinels won’t be ready for quite a long time. Magneto would still be able to control the models with just the metal he implants them with. If Trask said with the proper funding they could have the robots ready in 40 years, then there would be a reasonable timeframe for the robots to be made without it affecting the X-Men until after the events of ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ . Yes it may sound ridiculious to fund something that will take 40 years to make and that would be a good reason to laugh him out of the room at first, but when the mutants are killing people off then that when they could give it another look.

If you want to read more about ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ I wrote a separate article all about Bolivar Trask.

Magneto’s new Costume in ‘X-Men: Days of Future’s Past’

Image

A first look at Michael Fassbender as Magneto in ‘X-men: Days of Future’s Past.  I really like the look of this costume as opposed to the red costume teased at the end of First Class.

The trailer for ‘X-men: Days of Future’s Past’ came out recently and I have embedded it for you viewing pleasure.
